Efficient and cost-effective transportation is critical throughout the entire metal ore supply chain, given the high volume and weight of the materials.
- From Mine to Processing Plant: Raw ore is typically transported by large haul trucks, conveyor belts, or rail for shorter distances.
- From Processing Plant to Port/Refinery: Concentrates or crude metals are transported by rail, road, or sometimes slurry pipelines (for finely ground concentrates mixed with water).
- International Shipping: For intercontinental movement, bulk carriers (ships) are the primary mode of transport for ores, concentrates, and refined metals. These vessels can carry hundreds of thousands of tons.
- Inland Distribution: From major ports or refineries, refined metals are transported by rail, truck, or smaller vessels to manufacturing plants and end-users.
